North and South Carolina End Legal Dispute Over Water...But This May Only Be The Beginning

North Carolina and South Carolina have settled their dispute over water from the Catawba-Wateree River Basin (Read More) but this may be the first of many lawsuits in the near future.

Researchers studying freshwater sustainability in the United States have found that the Southeast, with the exception of Florida, does not have enough water capacity to meet its future needs.(http://www.charlestonbusiness.com).

This is definitely to keep an eye on in the next few years and we thought it was interesting reading.

Utility Costs On The Rise

Mount Pleasant Water Works (MPWW) and SCE&G both recently announced increases in their rates for 2010.  MPWW increased its rates by 9% starting January 1, 2010.  SCE&G is seeking to raise rate by 9.5% with the first phase starting on July 15, 2010.

Electricity, water and gas rates are still relatively inexpensive when compared with other states so it is not always on homeowners minds.  This latest round of increases should serve as a friendly reminder to pay more attention to our consmption behaviour.  A great solution is a elctricity consumption device, such as TED 5000 (http://www.theenergydetective.com/ted-5000-overview.html).  This device will display your real-time and historic consumption data.  It also integrates with Google's PowerMeter application to allow you to view your data from anywhere in the world.

Wind Energy Discussion by Charleston Green Drinks

Charleston Green Drinks has put together a Q&A session about what the new grant for wind energy  means to South Carolina and the Charleston area.  It should be a great event as representatives from Clemson University and General Electric will be present.

The Q&A is slated for February 10 from 6:30-8:30 PM.  The location will be announced shortly.  I encourage everyone who is interested in being a part of this opportunity or just curious to learn more to attend.

Black Friday Is For Tech Junkies!

Check out this link (http://www.electronichouse.com/slideshow/products/7339/1088) with 16 Hot Deas for Black Friday.  There really are some items that may be worth sleeping in a tent all night.

The highlight, for me anway, is at slide #9.  It's a Blu-Ray disc player regularly priced at $149.99 plus two blu-ray disc selling for just $99.  The "No Brainer" about his deal is the fact that Beetlejuice is one of the movies.

Save Money, Save Water, Save a Life

"Intelligent" Irrigation Systems Save More Than Just Water

oneZone Solutions announced today the release of its "Intelligent" irrigation system designed specifically for residential properties. oneZone's system incorporates a "brain" into existing irrigation systems to reduce water use by up to 40%. The system takes into consideration variables such as rainfall, temperature, humidity and wind before dispensing the water. This means that the system will no longer run before, during or after a rainfall.

According to the EPA, landscape irrigation wastes up to 1.5 billion gallons of water every day across the country. Weather-based irrigation controllers can save nearly 24 billion gallons per year across the US. This is equal to more than 7,000 hoses constantly running for a full year. oneZone's system saves more than just water. The system is priced so that the return on investiment is typically less than two years.

In addition to saving money and reducing the strain on the environment, oneZone Solutions is donating 10% of all revenues to Water Missions International. Water Missions International is an international Christian nonprofit, headquartered in Charleston, SC, that serves the water and sanitation needs of people in developing countries and disaster areas.
